MOUSAGÉTĒS

To Potnia Theron Artemis

To you I pray, Artemis
Of Magnanimous Zeus
And Queenly Leto—
You came.

Archeress—radiant, rightful—
Dealing doom and grace
In equal parts.

Let all beasts receive their share,
Our flocks and our homes as well.
Over all of them
Unerring is your rule.

Those of innocent mind
And wagging tails.
They too look up
and see you,
Fierce, deadly huntress.

The scales you tip
in Godly time.
Let plague in retribution haunt
Those who harm
Creatures that wild were
But now on us depend.

And allow divine peace
to those of your domain.

I praise you, Mighty Mistress!
Potnia Theron Artemis
and Apollo too, who
both deals and averts.

Hail Perfect Children
Of slender-ankled Leto
And Zeus, Father of all.

An experimental poem from a girl obsessed with prose.

There's a house by my Pilates class with four dogs and two little kittens; the man living there is a drunk, feeds them (though that is hardly a worthy word) with whatever he bothers to find in the trash. They are gorgeous beasts, with their tails wagging faithfully at the expectation of their master.

I offered a quick prayer in between aching thighs and the heavy feeling on my stomach. Prayed for peace and retribution, as Artemis delivers both. I pray and honor Potnia Theron Artemis often, and with the start of Thargelion and the nearing of Thargelia, it is only adequate I write a piece in honor of her Mighty and Faultless name.
